Single fabric construction closes material loop in men’s and women’s Bike Commute Mono Jacket
IDSTEIN (February 2023) - Jack Wolfskin prioritizes active lifestyles and a more sustainable environment in its new Bike Commute cycling apparel and equipment collection available beginning this spring. Designed to provide comfort and weather protection for urban riders in styles that crossover into everyday attire, each of the pieces are thoughtfully constructed with recycled or reused materials to minimize its impact on the planet.
A leading performance apparel industry goal is to create a closed loop material cycle where apparel may be recycled and repurposed into future products to minimize the use of natural resources. A closed-loop recycling economy is currently a major challenge for the textile industry. Standard products consist of many different materials or mixed fabrics and cannot be separated by type. For this to succeed, however, the entire product life cycle must be considered and redeveloped, starting with design, through material development and production, to disposal. Jack Wolfskin takes a significant step toward this goal with the introduction of the men’s and women’s Bike Commute Mono Jacket that is comprised of a single material that sets a new standard in terms of sustainability, innovation and performance.
By using a single material type (here PES), the jacket can be recycledthe end of its use phase. Only the zippers and reflective elements have to be removed before the recycling process. Products that consist of only one material (monomaterial) are easy to allocate by sorting plants and can be fed into the recycling loop to be available again as a new "raw material" for new products. Through this recycling process, the use of fossil resources is minimized establishing the opportunity for closed loop recycling.
To enable easy recycling without loss of quality, the 3-layer Texapore Ecosphere shell fabric in the Bike Commute Mono Jacket is made completely from recycled polyester. The waterproof breathable membrane is made of cutting waste from the manufacturing process that is then reintroduced into the production cycle – a zero waste concept. The outer and inner layer of the fabric is made from recycled PET bottles. Even the adhesive that bonds the membrane to the material is made from 80 percent recycled polyester
